The Devil Made Us Do It

I’d like to personally invite you to attend the opening reception of, The Devil Made Us Do It, Depictions of Satan in Kentucky Folk Art. Curated by the Kentucky Folk Art Center, this exhibit examines how the character of the devil has been portrayed by generations of self-taught artists from Kentucky. My own carefully made piece, “The Root of All”, will be included in the exhibition. I encourage you to come look at the piece for yourself. Photos really do not capture the detail of my imaginings of Satan.

Lucy, a Primitive Devil with Black Cat Bucket.

This little Devil is quite the charmer! Meet Lucy. Lucy & her kitty treat bucket are my original designs. Lucy has been painted & sanded, top to bottom many, many times & sealed so she may be beautifully preserved. Lucy has a weighted torso allowing her to sit nicely. She was lightly wired arms & measures 17″ tall from the tip of her horns to the bottom of her feet.

Lucy’s face has been painted with a variety of media. Her nose & bottom lip have been needle-sculpted by hand. Lucy’s horns have been attached separately & are NOT removable.

I’ve needle-sculpted Lucy’s fingers by hand. She wears painted dark grey gloves. She also wears pretty black boots with fancy red laces & grey socks.

Lucy’s stiff cape is made from muslin & has been painted red, heavily stained & sanded. It features a stiff collar that can be worn up or down & also features pretty mismatched buttons in the front. It ties with a chocolate ribbon & is machine stitched along the outer edge.  Lucy’s skirt is a fabulous black & white Robert Kaufman print. Her blouse is made from muslin & features hand-gathered sleeves & a black button at the neckline.

I’ve loved making these trick-or-treat buckets! This darling kitty measures a bit over 4″ tall & is 3″ wide. It has been sculpted from paperclay without the use of molds…only my hands & a paintbrush. Kitty’s handle is fashioned from rusty wire which is not removable.

Lucy’s hair is curly strawberry blonde 100% mohair. It was lightly glued, carefully needle-felted to her head & styled into a wild little bob.
