New Ornies for the Tree!

Before you know it, it will be time to decorate the Christmas tree. I have to admit, I’m looking forward to it. I’ve already been drooling over all the handmade ornaments on Etsy & thinking about what I might like to make for my own tree this year. I always stick little nests in there. And grapevine. My tree topper is one of the first angels I ever made with coffee stained wings and no face. Some of my favorite holiday decorations are homemade banners made of cardstock & string. They’re just random little phrases that make me smile. I string them above doorways or the bed or above the kitchen sink. You can see pictures of a few in this post from last year.

I hope I can hold off until at LEAST Thanksgiving before the little banners & baubles go up. It’s getting harder as I’ve found myself humming Christmas carols for a while now.

Here are the ornies I have listed this week.

Olive, a Primitive Christmas Angel with Peace & Stillness in Her Arms.

This little charmer is Olive. I’ve created Olive for a special Christmas challenge posed by the eBay artist group, Prim & Whimsy Girls. The theme for this challenge is “A Caroling We Go’. (To see more pieces created for this challenge, search PWGL CHRISTMAS on eBay through Nov. 8th.) This little lady was inspired by the Christmas carol “It Came Upon a Midnight Clear”, originally a poem by Edmund Sears. Though this poem first appeared in print in 1849, its call for peace & stillness is just as relevant today. Olive was inspired by these words.

It came upon the midnight clear,
That glorious song of old,
From angels bending near the earth,
To touch their harps of gold:
“Peace on the earth, goodwill to men,
From heaven’s all-gracious King.”
The world in solemn stillness lay,
To hear the angels sing.

Still through the cloven skies they come,
With peaceful wings unfurled,
And still their heavenly music floats
O’er all the weary world;
Above its sad and lowly plains,
They bend on hovering wing,
And ever o’er its Babel sounds
The blessèd angels sing.

Yet with the woes of sin and strife
The world has suffered long;
Beneath the angel-strain have rolled
Two thousand years of wrong;
And man, at war with man, hears not
The love-song which they bring;
O hush the noise, ye men of strife,
And hear the angels sing.

And ye, beneath life’s crushing load,
Whose forms are bending low,
Who toil along the climbing way
With painful steps and slow,
Look now! for glad and golden hours
come swiftly on the wing.
O rest beside the weary road,
And hear the angels sing!

For lo!, the days are hastening on,
By prophet seen of old,
When with the ever-encircling years
Shall come the time foretold
When peace shall over all the earth
Its ancient splendors fling,
And the whole world send back the song
Which now the angels sing.

Olive’s arms are lightly wired allowing them to be gently posed.

Olive’s skirt is made of soft handkerchief linen. Her top skirt is made of slightly sheer cotton voile. Both skirts feature swarovski crystals at the hemline for a touch of sparkle. There are 10 swarovski crystals, in total, on Olive’s dress. Her blouse has been made of muslin & features two dark grey mother of pearl buttons at the neckline & hand gathered sleeves. She sports grey painted gloves. All visible hems have been hand-stitched, as has the back of Olive’s blouse. All clothing has been treated to a coffee bath for a slightly aged & grungy appearance. It was then hand-washed & pressed.

Olive carries upon her arms two doves. Each dove has been made from three separate pieces & features hand-quilted wings.  They have been painted, sanded & aged & are wired to Olive’s arms with rusty wire.

Minnie, a Folk Art Snow Girl & Ginger – a Delicious Christmas Treat for your Tree.

Ok. I’ll take that back, you probably don’t want to EAT Ginger. Muslin & stuffing & paint & glitter probably do not taste very good. And instead of the warm fuzzies, you may wind up with the cold sweats.

But this little girl just might make your holidays a little more cheerful. I’ve certainly enjoyed bringing her to life the last few days!

She has a friend, too. Minnie. Minnie is a little smaller. But lacks nothing in the charm department.

These OOAK ornies are available on Ebay this week (along with Ella, below…) Click here to check out these little guys, available in separate auctions.

Ella, A Primitive SnowGirl Full of Sass & Charm

This little girl looks quite the priss with her ruby red lips & stylish wool hat! Meet Ella. Ella is my original design. She measures 16″ tall from the top of her head to the bottom of her feat. Ella has been made of muslin, stuffed with fiberfill & painted & sanded many times, giving her a lovely, aged patina. She has been sealed with a combination of matte & glossy sealers so that she may be beautifully preserved. Ella has a hemp loop attached to her back making her suitable for hanging or she may sit with assistance. Her knees are sewn through, making her a perfect shelf sitter. Ella’s arms are lightly wired allowing them to be gently posed.

Ella’s face has been painted with a variety of media. She has deep red lips & a dark orange nose. (More of a bittersweet, really.) Ella’s bottom lip has been needle-sculpted by hand. Her cheeks have been dusted with vintage-style glass glitter, giving her the perfect frosty twinkle.

The Marcus Brothers fabric is chocolate with cream polka dots. Ella’s blouse has been made of taupe osnaburg & features a vintage, mother of pearl button at the neckline. It also features puffy, hand-gathered sleeves. All exposed hems have been hand-stitched. There is also hand-stitching at the neckline of Ella’s blouse & along the back seam.

Ella’s hat has been constructed from 100% wool felt, which I shaped into a cute cloche style hat. The grosgrain ribbon has been hand-stitched to the hat with olive embroidery thread. It features a vintage mother of pearl button on the upturned side. The outer edge of Ella’s hat has been trimmed with pinking shears. Ella’s hat is not attached to her head. It is removable.

EllaBearBag

This little guy is such a cute traveling companion. He’s 5″ tall, has been constructed from muslin, stuffed with fiberfill & hand-painted, sanded & aged from head to toe. His neck, legs & arms have been needle-sculpted by hand. His little bag has been made from burlap, features vintage & new buttons & is looped around Ella’s arm with a chocolate ribbon handle.
